American Historic Trails
The pioneers, settlers, and families brought their oxen teams, and wagons filled with food, clothes, and other belongings. They pushed wheelbarrows and two wheeled carts filled with the essentials, along by hand.
Most people walked along side the wagon trains helping one another to survive the long journey.
Appalachian Trails
The National Historic Trails System Act of 1968 designated the Appalachian Trails as the first National Scenic Trail. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is currently protected along more than 99 percent of its course by federal or state ownership of the land or by rights-of-way.
Applegate Trail
The Applegate Trail was the southern Trail of Oregon. It was blazed in 1846 as an alternate trail to Oregon. Three Applegate brothers and their families come to Oregon on the original Trail of Oregon during the first major migration in 1843. On the Columbian River just outside The Dalles, Oregon, one of the rafts capsized drowning two sons of the brothers and an uncle. This tragedy made the brothers more determined to save others from similar grief and find a safer way to the Oregon Territory.

National Scenic Trails

Trail of Oregon
Beginning, in the year 1841, and continuing, for more than 20 years, an estimated 300,000 emigrants followed this route. It started in Independence, Missouri and went to Oregon City, Oregon. Southern Oregon
Roughly defined southern Oregon is the region from the California line south of Ashland, Oregon in the southern part of the Rogue River Valley to just north of Roseburg, Oregon. Lying between the coastal Range of the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains, southern Oregon is a mountainous area. It is more like northern California than the rest of Oregon.
The Grants Pass
Grants Pass, Oregon started out as a stop on the stagecoach road between Sacramento, California and Portland, Oregon. It was more than likely the excellent weather and its close proximity to some of the most spectacular scenery that made it much more than a crossroads town. With the Rogue River running through the center of town, it is no surprise that most recreational activities focus around the water. Located at the junction of I-5 and U.S. 199 Grants Pass, Oregon is also the largest town as you are heading for the redwood forest.
